Weekend Space Command (Prototype) is a peek at what location-based games could do.  A self-contained game that needs no internet connection, but can still identify 7 million places worth visiting.

Take on the role of a Captain in Research Fleet, prepare to do some exploration, and visit 4 (or more) places in real life! Yes, it's a prototype, you're not supposed to play it forever. Download it, try it out, and provide some feedback. See how it delivers on a fundamental premise and decide if this is good enough to build on, or if the data needs expanded, or isn't your jam at all, and tell me about it here!

Release B is available now! See the dev log for info on whats changed.

Do you want to make your own location based game similar to this? The source code is available here on github

What might a full release of Weekend Space Command look like?

  • A full narrative to follow, with a proper ending and a promotion to Admiral. Find your crew, lead them through moral decisions, watch them grow, and advance their own careers.
  • More focused missions for particular types of destinations. Specific expeditions to libraries, museums and art galleries, and specific tasks that involve doing stuff specific to that place. Read and reflect on some poetry at a new library, make comments on a collection at a museum, or argue with yourself about the meaning of some art at a gallery.
  • A UI that's thematic and nice to look at, built up beyond colored boxes. Possibly custom layout that only appear on certain days for fun.

KNOWN ISSUES TO FIX  IN FUTURE PROTOTYPE RELEASES:

  • Buttons need to be disabled while they process. It can take a few seconds to scan large or dense areas.
    • In areas with a very high POI density, it can take several seconds between completing an order and the dialog popping up to advance the plot as it tries to pick a location.
  • Only one place name shows up at once per sector, though multiple places can overlap. This means you can be told to go to a place that is in the data set but not registered on the map because of overlapping nearby Places (EX: Where several named trails cross, the game will only display one name but can ask you to arrive at any of them in the same spot).
    • There's a “Place Inaccessible Or Not Giving Credit” button for this at the moment. Tap that when you’re within about 5 sectors of your destination and it’ll force the Complete button to appear.
  • Unnamed points of interest show up on the map, and don’t change the displayed place name. These should probably say “unnamed [place type]” to avoid confusion.
